And Crescendo Detroit isn’t a cause simply attached to a show. A real partnership and shared purpose came first.
Crescendo Detroit is a nonprofit whose free after-school and summer arts programs nurture the whole child through music, dance, academic support, life skills and mentorship. Its work is grounded in high expectations, excellence and a simple belief: if they can see it, they can be it. But seeing is only the beginning. Young people also need mentors, preparation and real opportunities to understand the path and do the work.
In 2025, Morris led a masterclass for Crescendo’s students that revealed a natural alignment and became the beginning of a partnership. While developing his new production, he knew he wanted to debut it in Detroit because of the city’s importance to Prince’s early career—and he knew he wanted Crescendo to be part of it. Inviting its young performers to be the Opening Act turned their shared philosophy into a real opportunity that begins long before they reach the stage.
None of it happened by accident. The music, the artists, Crescendo’s young performers and Detroit itself are all here for a reason. Together, they create a great night of music with a story and purpose all its own.
